Who Knew?

B-Roll [March 20-24, 2009]

Really sorry about the lack of posts over the past couple of weeks. There hasn’t been much that’s caught my interest lately… I’m hoping to compensate for that by getting a couple of (exclusive?) interviews to post on the blog. Stay tuned.

  • Network capacity concerns may lead mobile carriers to charge for data based on the time of day.

  • Columbia Journalism Review conducts an interview with Julia Angwin, the author of “Stealing Myspace: The Battle to Control The Most Popular Website in America”. Most of her sources wished to remain anonymous, but even the publicly available information she discusses in the interview is still pretty shocking.

  • Following up Rob Walker’s post on Murketing about “immaterialism” [see here] and the satisfaction people derive from it compared to physical goods, a post on the real ecological effects of virtual consumerism.

  • Some small bands are complaining that online piracy is cannibalizing album sales, citing download numbers from torrent trackers as evidence. The problem is that the statistics they’re sourcing are actually from adware-filled pseudo-torrent sites that don’t reflect the actual numbers - in reality, they’re just grossly overestimating their popularity.
