Introducing TorrentDroid, the winner of a contest on AndroidAndMe. Its premise is currently blowing my mind.
Imagine you’re in a Best Buy and you see a DVD. You take out your phone, scan the UPC barcode with the G1’s camera and it’ll do a search on The Pirate Bay for the movie. You click on the most accurate link in the search results and it downloads the .torrent file to your phone. Your phone then remotely connects to your home computer, transmits the .torrent file and adds the download to your uTorrent queue so it’s ready to watch by the time you get home.
The original idea for the contest was meant to display the possible commercial benefits of BitTorrent (for example, scanning a UPC code from a newspaper ad and getting a .torrent file linking to exclusive promotional content like wallpapers or ringtones). But the implications for piracy in this implementation are staggering.
Here’s a video of TorrentDroid in action. [via TorrentFreak]
