Who Knew?

Don’t buy an iPod touch this summer.

One major improvement to the new iPhone 3GS is an improved graphics chip that supports the OpenGL ES 2.0 specification. Stay with me here.

Previous iPhones and the current iPod touch model only support OpenGL ES 1.1, which doesn’t work with 2.0-specific graphics capabilities. So app developers who want to take advantage of the new 2.0 features will either need to maintain additional code to support 1.1 or, more likely, break compatibility altogether. Over the next six months, many iPhone apps will probably release new versions which will be incompatible with OpenGL ES 1.1 devices (like the iPod touch). And the whole App Store thing is why you chose the Touch over the Classic in the first place, right?

Most experts on Apple’s ultra-confidential release schedule predict the company to introduce new iPod touch models sometime in September or October, and odds are the newest generation will probably support OpenGL ES 2.0. So just wait a few months, and you’ll have access to all the apps you want.
